I know Kung Fu. When Neo said those words in the Matrix movies, he'd just become a martial arts expert after 10 hours in a hyper-speed simulator. Nvidia has made this type of simulator a reality. "Isaac Gym and Sim" can speed up time by 1000x and enable AI characters to develop all types of skills, including martial arts. The video is a real example of that, as shown by Jim Fan in a recent Ted talk (see comments for the link).

And the crazy thing is, once these skills have been developed virtually, they can be transferred to a robot body. This means that -after just 3 days of training- we can have a martial arts black belt robot. Amazing and somewhat scary at the same time.

The Future of Human Learning?

Now, what I'd like to know - would this work for humans in the future as well? We can definitely make virtual environments that run at 1000x (that's basically what Nvidia does here), but would our brains be able to cope with that - or any speed increase for that matter? What do you think?

In today's data-driven world

Businesses are eager to leverage the power of AI to gain insights and drive growth. However, using public AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude comes with its share of risks, especially when it involves personally identifiable information (PII) or business secrets. While these models are impressive, they often require data that might be too sensitive to share, leading to potential data leaks or, worse, identity theft.

Moreover, navigating the complex landscape of privacy laws, such as GDPR, adds another layer of complexity. Balancing the power of AI with the need to keep sensitive information secure is a crucial challenge for organisations.

Enter local models

The new kid on the block that might just be the solution businesses have been waiting for. These open-source, community-produced models can be run privately, providing a secure alternative to public AI models. While not as robust as GPT-4 or Gemini yet, they're now good enough for a different purpose.

One standout example is Mixtral 8x7, recently released by the French group Mistral AI. It's topping the charts among open-source models and, in my testing, is the very first that can consistently follow instructions to anonymise data.

Here's how it can be automated:

  • User interacts with AI like ChatGPT (or another smart public model).
  • Under the hood, a "local" Mixtral 8x7 AI model filters (anonymises) the data before it's sent to ChatGPT.
  • Still under the hood, the response from ChatGPT comes in and is de-anonymised.
  • User receives the response.

Isaac Asimov, the renowned science fiction author, introduced the concept of Robopsychology in his iRobot stories back in the 1940s and '50s. Surprisingly, he was more on point than anyone in the AI field had anticipated. While we've mastered training AIs to generate text and reason about problems, the inner workings of this reasoning remain a bit of a mystery. This has led to a fascinating side effect: serious scientific papers focusing on prompting strategies.

So, how can you leverage this? The internet is awash with "prompting strategies," but these three have been scientifically proven:

  1. "This is very important to my career" and similar emotional prompts can improve results by 10.9% (Microsoft, Beijing University).
  2. "Let's do the Math!" or "Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step" lead to an 11% accuracy increase for problems requiring reasoning and/or math.
  3. [Advanced] Initial research suggests it might not be necessary to fine-tune models at all. By blending techniques like AI-generated Chain-of-Thought and dynamically picking the best matching prompting examples (dynamic few-shot), similar results can be achieved.

Bonus: Offering to tip your AI with $200 or more allegedly yields more complete results. Not scientifically proven, but worth a glance for the curious.

Erik's Notes:

  • For math problems, the best approach is still to provide the LLM with a coding environment or an API for calculations.
  • While most of you will have seen the prompting tip "You are a [role] and you [perform activities]", issues arise from overly detailed instructions without explaining the why. This can lead to the wrong type of response in edge cases.

Google Releases PaLM v2

Yesterday, Google released their answer to GPT-4: the PaLM v2 model. It's a big deal. Not so much because it's better (it seems to be on par) but because there are now at least two very powerful AI models by two different companies that anyone can use and build applications for.

The Reality of AI Hype

If you haven't tried either option and have been using the (free) ChatGPT version, you'd be (somewhat) excused for thinking that all of this AI hype is just that: hype. Once you do get to try the latest models and ask it to help you role-play a difficult situation at work or help you brainstorm the solution to a difficult problem, you'll know. You'll know that you're staring disruption in the face.

To be clear: I'm not saying Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is here, or the singularity, or the Evil AI Overlords. But if you are still claiming that AI is just another hype, it's time to get your head out of the sand.

The Impact of Technology Disruption

One way I talk about the impact of technology disruption is by multiplying the magnitude (how many people/industries/jobs will this impact) with the inverse of the years required for the disruption to "roll out". Let's take a conservative estimate for the magnitude of the AI disruption. Due to the very short amount of time that it needs, AI will still feel much more disruptive - and very uncomfortable.

The World Wide Web was a fast disruption, but it still needed a lot of people to install a PC at home first. This time, we'll have much less time to adapt to the new reality.

These photorealistic images are generated by the latest AI model: Midjourney v5 - going live this week. While this rapid AI (r)evolution will be very disruptive, I strongly believe it also opens up opportunities. Yes, also for photography and copywriting.

This week in my AI Disruption series, I have some exciting news to share! Researchers from the University of Florida have made a groundbreaking discovery: the current generation of AI models can predict incoming stock market news with greater accuracy than any other existing model. While it's no secret that AI has been used in stock trading for quite some time, the researchers state, "Our results suggest that incorporating advanced language models into the investment decision-making process can yield more accurate predictions and enhance the performance of quantitative trading strategies."

In my presentation last week on the current state of Applied AI, I discussed how the term "generative AI" might be misinterpreted by many. Although technically correct, I argue that the true disruption will not come from AI-generated stories and poems, but rather from the emergent skills of current AI systems. Emergent skills are capabilities that these models were not specifically trained or designed for, such as predicting stock markets, and often cannot be easily explained. In the coming weeks and months, you can expect to see many more examples of these skills in action!

I couldn't help but ponder on how AI can be used to counter such practices. Enter The Responder, my tongue-in-cheek antidote to show that AI can also be used for good.

The Responder springs into action, creating a Monty Python-style rejection based not only on the email but also on the LinkedIn profile of the salesperson. Now, I must confess, I'm no AI genius or even a great developer. The Responder is a testament to how low the barriers are at the moment when it comes to utilising AI technology.
